How To Remove Old Content From Your Website To Boost Your SEO [video]
Ramblin Jackson is moving! I’ll keep you posted on the move – but we’ve got some big changes. We have outgrown our current space. Our business has changed, and our staff has grown.
As we move, I am handling a lot of the SEO for our business — we’ll have a whole other blog post about how moving affects your Name Address and Phone citations — but today I wanted to talk about content.
We’ve been in business since 2009 and have produced a weekly video for most weeks out of the year for a nearly 9 years. A lot of those posts — they’re bad. They’re old, irrelevant, or were otherwise never good to begin with. It’s time to go.
Removing Bad Content From Your Website Is Like Pruning A Plant
In many ways, your website and online presence is like a garden or a nice houseplant. When you prune a plant of its dying limbs and leaves, it refocuses the nutrients back into the plant to help it thrive. It’s the same with your website.
It’s time to audit your website. What needs to go?
Is your content and design a reflection of your current business?
Are your testimonials current or out of date?
Do you even offer those services any more… and do you want the kind of leads that content brings in?
If not – it’s probably time to CUT that content. Get it out – and 301 redirect the old pages to the correct ones.
Removing and redirecting content has SEO benefits
Removing and redirecting low quality content has significant SEO benefits.
1) Help remove potential duplicate content
2) Help redirect old pages to the ones you actually want to rank
3) Help potential customers find the best possible content so they actually work with you
How to identify low quality content with Google Analytics
- Look in Google Analytics for Landing Pages
- High Bounce rate – are people just leaving the page? Bad sign
- Pages with low visits all together
- Pages without many links pointing to them
301 Redirect Pages You’ve Cut
After you’ve identified the bad pages — cut them! And then 301 redirect them to the page you want them to link to.
