$60,000… Close your eyes and just imagine a room full of $60,000. What would you do with it? Would you swim in it? I know I would, and I was inches away from having a check in hand for $60,000, but I told my client, I can’t take your money. This isn’t going to work.
My client Tom Backman, the owner of BMIL, a refrigeration supply company, came to me wanting to start a new marketing campaign. We had already solved his original problem of not getting enough of the right leads when we redesigned his website and redid his SEO. Things were going really well and he wanted to take things to the next level with a new project.
Tom had spent over $50,000 with another marketing agency and had seen ZERO results… So, we sat down and started talking about what he wanted to do with this new campaign and what the budget for it was. He had set aside $60,000 for this new campaign alone and was ready to spend it right away, but in talking with Tom, I didn’t feel like what he wanted to do was a viable plan. I didn’t feel like SEO or digital marketing in general was going to help him.
So, instead of doing a $60,000 project, we did a small audit to decide what Tom’s next steps in marketing should be. Here’s what happened and what Tom thought of the idea:
I've had a relationship with Ramblin Jackson for a little more than a year now, and I got to tell you about something that happened recently. I contracted Ramblin Jackson to do a study for me because I was about to spend $60,000 on a marketing campaign and I wasn't sure if I was going in the right direction. Well, for a few hundred dollars Ramblin Jackson did the study. They would have benefited to the tune of $60,000 out of the campaign I was going to execute, but in fact they researched it, gave me the evidence, gave me the data, gave me the background, and made me realize I should save that $60,000 and not carry on with the project. - Tom Backman, Owner of BMIL
At Ramblin Jackson, one of our core values is to create profit AND results with integrity. We love profit. It drives our economy and is the life blood of small businesses, but if we aren’t creating profit with integrity, and if we aren’t certain that we are going to create results, then we simply don’t offer our services. We found that our services weren’t going to create results for BMIL, so we did not take on the project.
This core value of creating profit and results with integrity is one of the reasons we have become the top rated marketing agency in Boulder, CO. Even though there are hundreds of marketing agencies in the area, we still remain a top choice because of the way we handle business and realize that profit means nothing if you don’t have integrity.
This is ultimately what gave us the ability to keep Tom on board for future projects and a long-term growth plan. A while back, Tom didn’t renew his growth plan and this is what happened…
I did business with Ramblin Jackson for a year. They helped me improve my website. They started to get leads to increase coming over my website. It was a really good experience. I didn't think about it. Didn't renew my contract. Noticed one day that my leads weren't coming in anymore, and I called Jack at Ramblin Jackson and I said “Jack what's the problem here? Why don't I get leads anymore?” He researched it and came back to me and he says “Well Tom the problem is you didn't renew your contract. In fact, it expired three months ago.” In three months I noticed my web leads dropping. We renewed the contract, leads came back up. It's been a very successful effort. - Tom Backman, Owner of BMIL
